Serving Individuals, Teens, Families & Groups

I love what I do. I am passionate about counseling and my work as a therapist. I work with adults, teens, children and their families. I believe that everyone has the capacity to develop the insight and skills to be their own best guide. I appreciate that our mind, body, spirit, and relationships are interrelated. I try to focus on each client’s strengths as well as their struggles and look for areas for growth. Most often, insight alone is inadequate to exact lasting change so I also incorporate techniques from action oriented therapies that emphasize learning new skills and trying out new behaviors.

My support consists in helping you to develop greater clarity and direction to improve the quality of your life and help you be the best version of yourself. I have a flexible therapeutic style that utilizes an array of approaches based on my training to meet your unique life, wherever you are at the moment.

Professional Experience & Education

Over the past 20 years, I have provided counseling in a variety of capacities including Asian refugee relocation, services to homeless leprosy patients in India, service learning in the Philippines and comprehensive relocation services in Spain. I have also worked for the State of Oregon at the Department of Human Services giving me a particular insight into the child welfare system in Oregon. All of these experiences have contributed to my clinical expertise. In 1997 I received my Masters of Science in Social Work from the University of Wisconsin- Madison, which is consistently ranked among the nations top Graduate Programs for Social Work.

My training was influenced by Psychodynamic (exploring the connection the present and the past), Cognitive Behavioral (exploring the connection between thought, emotion, and behavior), Interpersonal Psychology (Beliefs and behaviors in the context of relationships and social interactions), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Radically Open DBT (RO-DBT) and Mindfulness Based Therapies. I am committed to using approaches that have been shown to be effective. I stay current with published research by regularly attending professional workshops and trainings.

Individual Therapy

I work with adults and teens, in 50 minute sessions, presenting with a variety of concerns, including mood disorders, such as anxiety and depression, ADHD, and relationship issues. I tailor my approach based on specific needs and use the following therapies.

Walking Therapy

Sometimes the body just needs to move in order to integrate thoughts, feelings and memories. I offer a limited number of 50 minute walking therapy appointments. We go at your pace, weather permitting.

Family Therapy/Parenting Skills

It is a joy to help families learn new skills to move beyond trying behavior, ineffective interactions and patterns. Throughout the course of therapy, I meet with parents, children and families together as needed.

Group Therapy-Radically Open DBT

I am one of a small cohort of Therapists trained in the therapy in Portland. Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy is a new treatment that targets over-controlled behavior. It has been used to treat some of the rigid responses and emotional inhibition thought to underlie many treatment-resistant conditions (Chronic Depression, Treatment-Resistant Anxiety Disorders, Anorexia Nervosa, Avoidant, Paranoid and Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorders and Autistic Spectrum Disorders). RO-DBT has been informed by over 20 years of clinical and experimental research.

Groups available:

Already have the first appointment scheduled? Here is a little more information to help you prepare for our first session.

I like to make sure that there is no disruption in services once we’ve begun due to insurance issues. To that end, prior to our first session, please contact brooke@medicalbillingnorthwest.com, with your insurance information.

Client out of pocket expenses (deductibles, co-insurance and co-payment) are due at time of service.

Cash, check and Visa or Mastercard, HSA or health savings account cards are accepted for payment.

No show and late cancellation fees cannot be billed to insurance and are the clients responsibility.

I would encourage you to think of our first session as a consultation with no strings attached. I will do my best to understand you and the unique concerns that bring you in. It is important for you to feel comfortable with your future therapist and this initial session will give you a sense of what it’s like to meet with me. It is also important for your future therapist to have the skills and experience necessary to treat your specific concerns. I’m happy to answer any questions that you may have about my training and experience. If it seems like we are a good match at the end of the session then we will schedule a regular time to meet where we can continue to assess your strengths, as well as your areas for growth, so that we can collaboratively develop a plan of action. If not, then I will be happy to make a referral to other services or qualified professionals who may be better suited to help you.

The beginning of our first session will be spent reviewing forms that address issues such as confidentiality, billing, the therapy process, and more. Copies of the forms are provided at the bottom of this sections for your convenience. The “Agreement for Services” and “Privacy Notice” are provided for your review, but it is not necessary for you print them out beforehand.

It is helpful, but not required, for you to print out and complete the “Client Information” prior to our first session. Please note that you will also be provided with an addendum to the “Agreement for Services” during our initial session that will further outline my business policies. If you have any difficulties downloading or printing out any of these forms then there will copies available in the waiting room when you arrive.
